AIS 2017-18 - First Session - 10/14/2017

All

PLEASE read through!!

Classes begin this Saturday

Classes start at 9:00 AM and end at 11:00 AM-I would like to start on time as I have 'nitty gritty' things to go over and get you to enjoy our "splendid teaching group" for the day.

Arrival Time: Between 8:15 and 8:45 AM (we have enhanced security-please be on time)

ID: Please bring Driver's license with you as an ID (security issues)-Children do not need an ID; I am not sure if you just sign in or if adults are given badges. Hence the need to arrive on time

CHILDREN will be given a number as they come in-we will call out the numbers around 9:00-ish that will help them choose whichever class/session they are interested in. PARENTS-it would help if you could read the brief descriptions (below) and tell your kids

IMPORTANT NOTE: PARENTS-YOU NEED TO STAY-I WOULD love both parents to stay –AT LEAST one is a MUST. Your interaction is essential, necessary, is of Value and WE would like to get to know you.

THIS IS A VOLUNTEER PROGRAM AND YOUR PARTICIPATION IN TEACHING AND HELPING IS VERY NECESSARY. PLEASE THINK ABOUT TOPICS YOU CAN SHARE.

TEACHERS:: PLEASE COME BY 8:30 AM

MY email address is: raj.raghavan@leidos.com (MY previous ".lmco.com" address will not work)

Topics for this Saturday:

1.       Making Candles-Learn what Candles are; what are they made of; where does it come from; how are fragrant candles made AND why? How hot is the flame; how long have candles existed –before the Romans and Greeks? How much LIGHT does a Candle Give? How is LIGHT measured
2.       Rocket Science: What are Rockets; Why do we need Rockets; What are they made of? How high do they fly AND   HOW do they FLY? What are trajectories? Do Rockets keep going UP and UP OR do they come down and CRASH!!
3.       Candy Experiments ; WHAT are candies? What do they have apart from SUGAR? Why are some candies SOFTER than the others? What is Hard Candy? WHAT can you do with Candies APART from EATING (NOTHING??)? WHY will Parents LOVE this topic?
4.       Surface Tension: What does that mean? How do things float? What are molecules, Cohesion? Does this APPLY only to water or other liquids? How about Acids-is there surface tension there? Does this apply to SOLIDS?
5.       GEOGRAPHY (DR. Shanti): YES THIS is SCIENCE too!! Have you ever wondered why, for example, South America will fit snugly around Africa? Did the Earth always have 7 continents? Is Mt. Everest's summit really the farthest point from the center of the Earth? Why are some countries more prone to earthquakes and volcanoes than others? Is "Sahara" the largest desert in the world? KEY for all these is GEOGRAPHY!!!

Cheers
