Back to wonderful sessions for three weeks before you enjoy another break.

Some of the kids, I heard, were taking the Magnet exam. Please wish them the best.

PLEASE TRY to be IN before 9:00 AM

We seem to have been stuck in a predominantly "Biology" type of sessions for the past month and a half (and Lockheed is a Technology company)-Go Figure!!

But, we are slowly transitioning to other Science areas.

WE have four interesting topics for you this Saturday

If you need any of the previous topics repeated, PLEASE let me know (ON SATURDAY!!). Depending on the interest, we will reschedule them.

Again, if you know someone who is a regular attendee and the name is missing from this distribution, please forward.

TOPICS ARE:

Session Nov 19

All

Hope you all are having a pleasant week-so far!!

For those who did the Candles session the week before last, PLEASE BE in by 8:45 AM to finish up – your "teacher" wants to make sure your candles are complete!

PARENTS: PLEASE ensure that your children, once they pick a session, STAY in THAT SESSION-do not "Accidentally" STRAY into a Different session because they like the other one better!! Teachers come prepared with supplies for a certain number and then if "magically" more kids appear, supplies run short. Appreciate your cooperation!!

Since this is a volunteer program, I trust folks when they say they will do something with the expectation that you will adhere to your assurances.  When you don't it makes for difficult times and unnecessary headaches (incurable too!!).

Please make sure that kids do not run around (yours and others' kids)-NOR use the chairs to verify "Newton's laws of motion" OR test out paper Airplanes and crash landing techniques!!

PLEASE TRY to be IN before 9:00 AM (Previous candle makers by 8:45 AM)-

We have 4 "Super Dupe" teachers this week. Every one of them is interesting, educational (Oh No!!), and necessary! Hope All parents can make it and interact with the teachers.

TOPICS ARE:

1.      PI, PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM and FRIENDS: Learn ALL about Pi, who was he, the Value of PI, what is Pythagorean Theorem (and his friends??) AND Amaze your friends in school!

2.      GENETICS AND HEREDITY:- What are these words & what do they mean, Why kids look like their Parents (OH MY GOD!!!) How each of us are different from others, What does genetic information say about health and diseases; how genetic engineering is used to treat diseases

3.      CANDLES AND CANDLEMAKING: (FOR THOSE THAT DID NOT GET TO DO THIS-NO REPEATERS PLEASE) What Is Wax, How many types of wax are there; how do you shape wax to make Candles (WITHOUT BURNING YOUR HAND!!); How do you add Fragrance to Candles and Why? Tips for Safe use andHow to Prevent Accidents; How to snuff s out the flame??

4.      FROG DISSECTION: What are frogs-what Biological system/family do they belong to; Do they have SIMILAR BODY Systems as HUMANs; How to Dissect and What will you see inside a FROG; FROGS are Guaranteed NOT TO JUMP AND THE BEST PART IS WHAT IS LEFT OUT AFTER YOUR DISSECTION IS YOURS!!

SEE YOU ALL SATURDAY-REMEMBER BRING ID, PLAN TO STAY, AND HELP!!

IF YOU KNOW ANYONE ELSE THAT SHOULD BE RECEIVING THIS BUT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE LIST, PLEASE FORWARD.

Yoga aficionados, come prepared.

2.      DNA EXTRACTION FROM STRAWBERRIES- What is DNA, where is it found, what does one do with it, WHERE is it used-why and How, Why Strawberries (Can these be eaten!!), What is a Helix-WHAT kind of SHAPE is it-A DIFFERENT TEACHER FROM LAST WEEK-DIFFERENT  PERSPECTIVE

3.      HOW AIRPLANES FLY: What are the basic laws(AERODYNAMICS) that govern flight; How do the SHAPES OF WINGS affect flying? YOU will perform SEVERAL EXPERIMENTS TO DEMONSTRATE AERODYNAMICS Laws; You WILL make PAPER AIRPLANE MODELS

AIS - Steam boat followup

Hi Raj and Krishna,

Please post this on the blog:

==========================

Steam boats was an ambitious project. Thank you all for joining us, several people got their steam boats to work but about half of us did not.

Don't feel bad! We tried several times ourselves to make steam boats and the first try didn't work for us either. There are many variables including making an airtight boiler and also a well balanced boat.

For $5 to $10 you could buy a nice toy steam boat already made. Most of these are built in India:
https://www.tintoyarcade.com/gold-top-mini-pop-pop-boat-tin-toy.html?language=en&currency=USD&gclid=CK-a9pec_8cCFY4WHwodpVMB_w

http://www.poppopboats.net

If you want to make a boat at home or tell your friends, here's a very good guide on how to do it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ki9Kta8g14

Here are a few other resources for making your own:
http://www.sciencetoymaker.org/boat/asembCartonl.html
http://www.instructables.com/id/Pop-pop-or-put-put-steamboat-made-easy-for-childre/

The Japanese movie about the boy and the mermaid is called "Ponyo." You can probably rent it with NetFlix but here's the trailer:
http://movies.disney.com/ponyo

Note: Ponyo is not a Disney movie - it comes from Japan. Disney bought the distribution rights in America and dubbed it in English.

The Japanese movie about steam engines and how to improve the safety of steam is called "Steamboy" and is PG-13. You can watch it for free on Crackle:
http://www.crackle.com/steamboy/2479960

Here is the video explaining how nuclear reactors are really just steam engines:
