AIS 2/17

All

At last count, from what I was told there were about 20 or so registration forms sent in. Please understand that this is a program for your children, for all including adults to gain knowledge, and show the fruits of the teachers’ (many of whom understand the prep time you put in) efforts in terms of a project. The preparation, thinking and delivery is to provide your children to understand the steps, the effort needed, the thought process and a presentation opportunity.

If you as parents do not “strongly” encourage them to do it, I believe a wrong example is set. As kids, I know they look up to you parents and generally follow your zeal, enthusiasm, perseverance, dedication-qualities instilled and learnt at an early age.

Hence, please encourage and convince them.

Teachers and others-any concerns, needs –please copy the four folks on the CC list. They will, as usual, work their magic to get you what you need. Sundry supplies-scissors, glue, rulers are in the adjacent room-please use if needed and put it back.

To the teachers doing acids and bases, and the rising sea levels-please bring paper towel rolls if possible. As usual some cooperation is needed to clean up, put furniture back, turn displays off etc.

I assume our consummate recording artist will work his magic and of course, there will be the usual “FULL” Yoga session this week.

Last I heard, snow was expected in the evening-so come to class and go ice-skating later-probably, sadly- the last snow of the season-if we get it.

PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE OUR YOUG ADULTS THAT MADE AMAZING PRESENTATIONS LAST WEEK.

Sessions are:

1.         ACIDS AND BASES (CHEMISTRY): LEARN all about ACIDS and BASES; what are the differences between them? What happens when you MIX them? EXPERIMENT with Universal indicator paper to see which substances are acids and which are bases. ; Does your body have both ACIDS and Bases? MAKE SHERBET – and taste it tooJ

2.      CYBER SECURITY: LEARN about the “ADULT” world of cybersecurity; How to prevent being hacked; how to hack others: How to code, encrypt messages and pass on secret messages to others; How many ways can a secret message be written. From a “Real-Life” practitioner!!

3.      RIVERS & OCEANS: What are they, which one has waves, what are Lakes, which is more dangerous-flowing water or rising water. Watch and see and probably create a wave, watch it rise (Not overflow and Damage the Leidos carpet!!)

4.      If Necessary there will be a fourth session.

All

Apologize for the delay-got busy with work.

Hope all of your children have decided on their topics and have started working on their projects. By popular demand, I am including a few links.

Parent’s Role in Science Projects: https://ais-lm.blogspot.com/p/parents-role-inscience-projects.html

We are there to anwer any questions you may have about Parent’s day, presentations etc.

A few guidelines:

1.      Those who registered formally (on the web site)  can present at Montgomery College on the 10th.

a.      If you are busy and your child is unable to on the 10th, please let us know-you can present on the 3rd of March at Leidos. The hope is that your child will present at MC

2.      Those who came late and registered with me, your children will present at Leidos on March 3rd.

3.      EVERYONE is welcome at Montgomery College-no prior notification needed.

4.      If other adults than parents are coming to Leidos on March 3rd, please let me know-I will let Security know.

REMEMBER: The lady who has taken on the responsibility of hosting a small party on the 3rd, will be getting in touch with you

We have a great treat for you this week-this is the week when three of our “young adults”, a smart bunch, are putting on display their knowledge and learning. This is an example for your kids to see what they can aspire to. These three are into a variety of things and I am amazed at their interests, desire and dedication and passion for Science.

A fourth young adult will be presenting on the 24th.

In addition, we have a gentleman who promised to let the adults know how to start and run a business, how to take advantage of tax laws, how to protect our intellectual property etc.-a fascinating topic.

However, when I mentioned that he will be doing this instead of Yoga, I could see the disappointment, sadness and anger in a few people’s eyes!!

Hence-we WILL have YOGA for about an hour from 9:00 to 10:00 and the business lecture from 10:00 11:00.

We do plan to record one of the young adult’s presentations. If our expert is able to come, he can decide on which one.

I don’t want to describe the topics-the presenters will-but briefly they are:

1.      Cybersecurity-WHY me? Good for all of us with gadgets

2.      The Special Theory of Relativity

3.      Engineering & Design

4.      Start a business/make Money/Protect your assets/Use Tax laws

5.      Yoga

Cheers

AIS THIS Saturday -2/3/17

All

Hope all of you have started working on a project. Per Dr. K, who tracks how many of you have sent in the registration form, the number received so far is ZERO.  You are not going to let me have the “dubious” record that no one from Leidos wanted to present on Parent’s day? Has never happened in my twenty five years of AIS-Why now??

Please get working –time is running short.

Someone mentioned that the Science Fair is on the same day as Parent’s day-March 10th. If that be the case, please try and juggle your schedules to attend both. It is as important for your child to have the “presentation” experience as attending the Science fair!!

We are going to be recording another session this week. Hopefully the gentleman who took the trouble to record has some news/suggestions etc. for the rest of us.

We have Four (4) sessions this week in addition to YOGA. I hear the participants are being groomed so well, that they are ready for a group demo soonJ

Topics are:

1.      Sheep heart Dissection (For those that did not make it-LAST dissection session)-LEARN all about the “circulatory system”, dissection basics. Also LEARN about the Immune system, why is it important, what size is an artery or vein, how is flow maintained, in which direction does Blood flow?

2.      Locomotives-How many types are there? What fuels are used-how are Diesel, Electric, Coal fuels different? How much heat/smoke, steam, power, and energy do they produce? What is the difference between them? Which is better? Can you build one at home?

3.      How to catch a Criminal – What methods are used to catch “bad people”/ Fingerprints, DNA analysis, Blood type matching, Photo Ids? Learn how DNA is analyzed in an “imaginary” Crime Scene?! How is DNA found at the scene linked to a suspect-a fascinating experiment.

4.      NUTRITION:  LEARN all about what is Nutrition? How is it defined? Who decides what is good and bad? (Do they really know?)  Are there any tests to determine this? Learn how Sugar, Protein and Fats in foods we eat are tested for AND Why? How accurate are the tests? Does the Brain control what one eats? Which part of the brain does this job?

See you all
