1.       Science of chess/moves/thought processes

2.       Photosynthesis and autumn leaves

3.       T-Rex to chickens, an adventure in biodiversity

AIS: LAUNCH TIME CHANGE PL. READ

Hi All,

Please note that there is a CHANGE in the timing of the Launch tomorrow.

LOCKHEED:  11 - 12 noon

Other facilities will be launching before us (9-11AM)

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Krishna S Samavedam <mail3ksam@gmail.com>
Date: Wed, Oct 28, 2015 at 9:56 PM
Subject: AIS Notes and Launch rules

Folks

DO NOT COME TO LOCKHEED MARTIN THIS SATURDAY-GO TO THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS

If you find any addresses missing, please forward.

1.     I have added everyone's names that have been sending me notes to let me know their names were dropped off the distribution list.

2.     Two folks Aaron and Krishna have web sites established-I BELIEVE.

3.     If you folks have good or Bad experiences, please post on the web-site (especially if you have a Bad experience)

PLEASE READ THE LAUNCH RULES THOROUGHLY

1.     IF AFTER READING, YOU WANT TO REMAKE YOUR ROCKETS PLEASE DO

2.     LM IS SUPPOSED TO LAUNCH BETWEEN 9:00 AM AND 10:00 AM –PLEASE GET THERE BY 8;45 AM AT THE LATEST

3.     LAUNCHING IS ON THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS (CHESTNUT STREET) IN GAITHERSBURG

4.     TAKE BOTH THE HOMEMADE ROCKETS AND THE KITS WITH YOU

5.     ONCE YOU GET THERE (PER THE NOTES I RECEIVED) THERE WILL BE WADDING AND (TALCUM) POWDER ON A TABLE (OR TWO). REMOVE THE NOSE CONE AND INSERT THE WADDING INSIDE AND SPRINKLE A LITTLE POWDER INSIDE AND REPLACE THE NOSE CONE (IF YOU TAPED THE NOSE CONE TO THE BODY, PLEASE PERFORM A QUICK REPAIRWORK BEFORE SDATURDAY!!)

Instructions:

All rockets must be loaded with wadding between the parachute and engine (provided on site). No one will be allowed down range when the rockets are launched, so they will launch in a group, then be released to chase after them. The engines burn for a time, then there is a delay before the back blast, in case there is a total failure and the rocket barely goes anywhere, they must not run to pick up the live rocket. Also, the engine will be HOT, so when they retrieve their rocket, they should avoid touching the engine

The engines are given out in two places, one at a time. An inspection is conducted at each of these locations by a 4H Rocket Club member (they may give out OK cards) If NOT APPROVED they will NOT allow you to launch. PLEASE Politely STAND YOUR GROUND. If they will not let you, I can't do much.

When you arrive, you are supposed to follow the following sequence:

Station 1) The kids will prepare their rockets with wadding and power.

Station 2) All rockets will be inspected and OK cards given out.

Station 3) Approved rockets are given an engine.

Station 4) All launch pads will be centrally located, but we might have 12 or more, depending upon the number of interlock switches that we can find. (Our loose battery technique is not allowed.)

ADDITIONALLY:

From the 4H Rocket Club person:

********************

Problems we see that can be repaired quickly at the inspection area are:

#1 - loose nose cone (fixed by adding a piece of masking tape to the shoulder),

#2) too tight of a nose cone (fixed by sanding),

#3 - no wadding (add wadding),

#4 - no motor retention (friction fit motor by adding masking tape or just tape motor to airframe),

#5 - no ignitor (add ignitor),   [our engines are pre-fused]

#6 - no motor (add motor), [we insert the engine]

#7 - no launch lug (superglue lug),

#8 - broken or severely misaligned fin (repair or re-attach fin using superglue).

#9 - no streamer or parachute (I will bring extra)

Thus kids are rarely turned away from the inspection table, and if so your leaders and/or our helpers will make sure they can fly a rocket either by helping them fix it or using one of the rockets that I will bring as backup.

********************

GOOD LUCK ALL

I WILL BE OUT OF TOWN ON TRAVEL-HENCE CANNOT ATTEND

Cheers

Fwd: AIS-Parent's Day Saturday-March 7

All

Attached are two files. The AIS_PD_Program_2015.pdf contains the: cover sheet, the programs for each room, and a floor plan for the Admin Building at NIST. Print the pages needed. The program is 8 pages total, but the type is bigger than past years.

Unless you find a really big error, it is done. No redoing the program because a project title or name is misspelled.

To find which room their kids are in, they can use the "room finder" file. We will have a small number of copies of the "room finder" at the front tables.  Presumably they can look Friday night or Saturday morning to figure out which room they are in. We will also have a small number of full programs printed up and available at the front tables.

Moderators can do the same.

We got a few more moderator names than expected. We assigned 3 per room, first using those with children presenting. For others that do not have presenters, they might still be needed to stand in for some no shows.

The children are listed in in each room in alphabetical order. If several are co-presenting or need to leave early, they can inform the moderators to revise the order

Request from Alga-the AIS 4-H community coordinator

There are two evaluation forms attached. Those who can and want to, please fill it up and send as an attachment to algapie@umd.edu-one (for youth and one for adults)

You can also bring this on Saturday.

https://umdsurvey.umd.edu/SE/?SID=SV_0IEyQHr37xTPj49

https://umdsurvey.umd.edu/SE/?SID=SV_0HY7rfR8SgsCM1T

PLEASE ARRIVE BETWEEN 8:15 AND 8:30. Follow directions of the folks (NIST Volunteers) at the gate. Bring a BIG DOSE of patience!!

See you all Saturday at NIST NOT Lockheed Martin!

Fwd: AIS: 2014-15 Projects and Sessions

Hello All,

It has been a wonderful year of many good sessions and the Parent's Day event was a huge success (I am sure the kids enjoyed the party the most!).

This year we had over 40+ sessions, thanks to relentless effort on Raj's part in recruiting parent volunteers and others teachers! The list of all presentations is updated in the blog: Presentations

This year, we had about 100 students who submitted their Parents Day projects, including the ones that presented last week at LM. The list is available at: Parents Day Presentations

I also want to thank you all for your generosity and for the thoughtful gift.

Looking forward to a great event for the kids next Saturday at NIST.

Thanks,
Krishna

Session Feb 28th

Folks

We have a great program for you all this Saturday.

We have one or two AIS assistants presenting for 30 minutes.

We have the following children making their Lockheed Martin Parent's Day presentations.

Then we have a party for you organized by Sai and Purvi.

Please come early.

Because Ryan Guernsey has other things to do ( in addition to being a support person for his siblings) he will be making an early presentation around 8:50 AM. His topic is: ""Are Lights in a Parallel Circuit Brighter than in a Series Circuit?"" Sounds like an exciting topic.

The others that will be presenting are below. If you gave me the presentation topics, I misplaced them. If you could send them to me by tomorrow, it would be appreciated.

1.      Anjali Natarajan

2.      Surya Natarajan

3.      Megha Krishnakumar
